Team Sooke/Juan de Fuca is delighted to announce that as of 5 December 2017 the family from Iraq are no longer refugees. They are now Newcomers to Canada and have moved into their new home.

We have finally found accommodation. As with everyone in southern Vancouver Island these days, the rent is going to be a higher proportion of their monthly budget than we had hoped. But they are delighted, and are very used to "making do."

They repeatedly express their thanks to the people of Sooke/JdF who have given them this chance at a new life in a safe and welcoming community.

Team Sooke/Juan de Fuca is delighted to announce that the Iraqi family of four we are sponsoring has completed all the required steps for immigration and is expected to arrive in Sooke in early December, 2017.

Now we are focusing on finding accommodation. We’re looking for at least two bedrooms, preferably in the Sooke town core and on the 61 bus route. But we’ll consider all options!

If you have any leads that can help us find this family a home, please phone Howard Taylor at 250.642.0908.

We also continue to welcome donations to help furnish the family’s home.

We are a group of Sooke region residents who are sponsoring an Iraqi refugee family.

The parents and their two daughters, 13 and 21, were forced to flee Mosul when it was taken over by ISIS in 2014. They are now struggling to survive as refugees in Lebanon.

The family's application has been approved by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. We expect to welcome them to Sooke spring or early summer, 2017.

Our job as sponsors:

  • Help them through the application process to come to Canada.
  • Pay all the family's expenses for at least a year.
  • Guide the family as they learn about life in Canada.
  • Support them in their efforts to become self-sufficient as soon as possible.

Thanks to tremendous community support we have raised the minimum $50,000 we need for the family's living expenses. We continue to welcome donations of goods or funds to help furnish the household.

All monetary donations are 100% tax-deductible.
